Toxic Human Foods Checklist

Essential Checklist for All Cat Parents

🚫 Human Foods That Are Toxic to Cats

Some of our favorite snacks can be dangerous, or even deadly, for cats. ⚠️

This checklist helps you keep your furry friend safe and healthy at home.

Onions and Garlic

Even a little bit of onion or garlic—raw, cooked, or powdered—can harm your cat’s red blood cells. This can lead to serious illness called anemia. Avoid feeding table scraps that have these ingredients.

Chocolate

Chocolate contains theobromine and caffeine, which are both toxic to cats. Dark chocolate and baking chocolate are the most dangerous. Even small amounts can cause heart problems or seizures.

Grapes and Raisins

Grapes and raisins can cause sudden kidney failure in cats. No one knows exactly why, but the results can be deadly. Keep them off counters and out of reach.

Alcohol

A tiny amount of alcohol can make a cat very sick. It affects their liver and brain faster than it does in humans. Never give cats food or drinks with alcohol—this includes things like raw dough.

Caffeine (Coffee, Tea, Energy Drinks)

Caffeine is a stimulant that speeds up your cat’s heart and nervous system. Even licking a used coffee filter or tea bag can be harmful. Signs of poisoning include restlessness, fast heartbeat, or shaking.

Xylitol (Found in Gum, Candy, Peanut Butter)

Xylitol is a sugar substitute that’s very toxic to cats. It can cause low blood sugar, vomiting, and even liver failure. Always check labels before sharing food.

Cooked Bones

Cooked bones can splinter and cause choking or serious injury to your cat’s stomach. Unlike raw bones, cooked ones are brittle and sharp. Never give them to your cat as a treat.

Raw Eggs, Meat, or Fish

Raw foods may carry bacteria like salmonella or E. coli, which can make your cat very sick. Raw egg whites also block a vitamin cats need. Always cook meat and fish before sharing.

Milk and Dairy

Most cats are lactose intolerant, meaning they can’t digest milk well. Dairy can cause stomach pain, gas, or diarrhea. Offer water instead, or special cat-safe treats.
